Supplier Sends Pre-Shipment Photos Instead of Inspection: What Buyers Should Verify

Product compliance documents and certificate review for U.S. importers

Supplier photos are useful, but they are not the same as inspection. A supplier may show attractive finished-product photos while skipping defects, carton data, labels, quantity checks, or document consistency. Buyers need to know what the photos actually prove.

If the order is new, high value, custom, or going directly to FBA, supplier-selected photos may not be enough before balance payment.

Ask what was photographed

Request photos of randomly selected units, not only perfect samples. Ask for packaging, labels, carton marks, carton weight, quantity, and defect examples if any issue exists.

For inspection evidence, read how to verify a China QC report. DDPexpert’s China quality inspection guide explains how independent checks reduce buyer risk.

Photos buyers should request

  • Random unit photos from different cartons.
  • Close-ups of labels, barcodes, and warnings.
  • Inner packaging and outer cartons.
  • Carton dimensions and gross weight.
  • Any defects, repairs, or rework areas.

Use photos as a screening step

Supplier photos can help decide whether to book inspection, request rework, or delay pickup. But they should not replace inspection when the order has quality, compliance, or packaging risk.

For first inspection timing, use the China inspection timing guide. If packaging is the concern, DDPexpert’s custom packaging China resource can help.

Final recommendation

Supplier photos are evidence, but limited evidence. Ask what they prove, request missing views, and use independent inspection before shipment when the risk is meaningful.
