Extra payment requests are not always fraudulent, but they should never be handled casually. A buyer needs to know what changed, who caused the change, and whether the written order record will be updated before money is sent.
Use this checklist when a supplier asks for more money after quote, deposit, production, packing, shipping, or customs planning.
Cost basis
- What exact cost increased?
- Was it excluded from the original quote?
- Can the supplier show a breakdown or third-party quote?
- Did product, packaging, carton data, or delivery address change?
For the full supplier-risk version, read extra payment after confirmed order. DDPexpert’s China sourcing workflow resource shows how cost changes should be handled in an order process.
Payment and protection
- Will the formal order record be amended?
- Does the payment account match the invoice company?
- Does paying extra affect refund or dispute rights?
- Can inspection still happen before final payment?
Shipping and customs
If the added cost is freight, ask for carton count, dimensions, weight, CBM, route, trade term, included fees, and excluded charges. If it is customs-related, ask for duty basis, HS code, declared value, and IOR responsibility.
For changed shipping cost, use the after-packing shipping cost checklist. DDPexpert’s China freight forwarder guide is useful for comparing quotes.
Final recommendation
Before sending more money, ask what changed, why it changed, who is responsible, and how the order record will be updated. A clear answer protects both sides.
