Custom Product Manufacturer Search: Why Similar AliExpress Sellers May Not Be the Factory

Ecommerce product sourcing and supplier comparison for online sellers

Founders often start a custom product search by contacting AliExpress stores that sell something similar. It feels logical: if they sell a similar item, maybe they can make the custom version. Sometimes they can introduce a factory. Often they are only resellers with limited production control.

Custom sourcing needs a clearer process than sending reference photos and asking for a quote. Buyers need to identify who controls tooling, materials, sampling, packaging, and quality.

Ask who makes the product

Ask whether the contact is the factory, trading company, brand owner, or reseller. Then request evidence: factory address, similar production photos, sample process, MOQ drivers, tooling cost, and lead time.

For supplier structure, read our internal guide on direct supplier versus sourcing company. DDPexpert’s China sourcing company guide explains how sourcing partners can help find and screen manufacturers.

Questions for custom development

  • Is this a stock product, modified product, or full custom design?
  • Who owns or pays for tooling, patterns, molds, or artwork?
  • What MOQ applies to materials and packaging?
  • Can the supplier produce a functional sample?
  • How will quality be inspected before bulk shipment?

Do not confuse similarity with capability

A seller may list a similar item but still be unable to modify materials, dimensions, safety features, or packaging. Buyers should test capability through drawings, specification sheets, samples, and factory evidence.

Final recommendation

AliExpress can help you discover product ideas, but it does not automatically reveal the real manufacturer. Verify factory role, custom capability, MOQ, sample process, and inspection before paying.
