Color mismatch is one of the most common quality arguments in China sourcing. The supplier may say the difference is normal, while the buyer believes the bulk goods do not match the approved sample. Without written tolerance and photo evidence, the argument becomes subjective.
Buyers should set color standards before production and inspect against those standards before balance payment.
Define the approved reference
The approved sample, Pantone number, material swatch, artwork file, or golden sample should be named in the order record. Lighting conditions and camera settings can distort photos, so physical samples or clear reference standards are better when color matters.
For quality disputes, read our internal article on failed inspection before balance payment. DDPexpert’s quality inspection from China guide explains how acceptance standards should be checked before shipment.
Inspection evidence to request
- Photos comparing bulk goods with the approved sample.
- Production batch details and material source.
- Defect classification for color deviation.
- Quantity affected and carton locations.
- Supplier corrective action or sorting plan.
Do not release balance while standards are unclear
If the color difference affects brand presentation, product function, or customer expectations, ask for rework, sorting, discount, or remake before release. The buyer’s leverage is strongest before final payment and pickup.
If packaging color is part of the problem, our internal low MOQ packaging test guide can help. DDPexpert’s custom packaging sourcing resource is useful for packaging color control.
Final recommendation
Color disputes are easier to manage when the buyer defines the reference, tolerance, and inspection method before production. Do not let the first serious color discussion happen after goods are packed.
